Colorimetry is the science of determining the precise lens tint that will alleviate symptoms of Visual Stress, also known as Irlen Syndrome, a condition that affects many people, dyslexics, migraine sufferers, epileptics, and others who find that their eyes feel more than simply tired at the end of the day.
A specially-designed instrument presents different lighting to determine the optimum colour that will reduce symptoms and a specialist lens company produces these lenses, with great accuracy. The resultant lenses are to be worn either all day, or just for specific tasks, depending on symptoms.
Dyslexics are most likely to benefit but there are a growing number of people who these tinted lenses help, including other neurodiverse categories, as well as people without any dianosed condition.
Children with reading difficulties but no need for regular glasses often benefit.
Whist visual stress is most common in school-age children but also adults and people with autism also find their vision far more comfortable.
Common symptoms include:
Words appearing to move, blur, or double when reading.
Feeling tired when focusing on text.
Sensitivity to bright light or high-contrast screens.
Headaches or eye strain after reading.
There are screening tests to determine whether colorimetry is indicated before proceeding.
We use the latest Cerium Intuitive Colorimeter, which has been designed to present the colours in 360 degrees of colour space, allowing a patient to swiftly identify the precision colour that will alleviate their symptoms.
The instrument is unique in offering tens of thousands of colour combinations as precision is crucial.
The test lasts approximately 15 minutes and is easy to follow. It is entirely subjective and therefore there are no incorrect answers. Reading speed both with adn without the filter can be checked.
Once the appropriate colour tint has been prescribed, lenses are then tinted and checked spectrally. A certificate of authenticity will be issued so patients can be assured they are receiving genuine Cerium precision tinted lenses.
If you feel that you’d benefit from colorimetry, please book in to have a regular eye exam, during which Adam will assess viability of colorimetry and will perform the colorimetry tests.
